Effects of water/bacteria

Water can be introduced to a tank in a number of ways such as: Faulty gaskets, vents not working properly, condensation build up, spill buckets not working properly, etc. It's a common occurrence in all tanks. This, however, needs to be dealt with swiftly. Once water is introduced to diesel fuel, bacteria will start to grow. In ethical based fuels, the biggest concern is the presence of water causing phase separation. Water and bacteria growth can also cause issues like deterioration of the fuel, clogged filters, damage to station/customer equipment, station downtime, and deterioration of the storage tank. Yearly/proactive fuel polishing in addition to frequent treatment is key to minimizing fuel related issues.
